Website optimization is the practice of improving a website's performance, user experience, and conversion outcomes through testing and iteration. It encompasses page speed, layout, content, navigation, and any other element that affects whether users accomplish what they came to do. When done rigorously, it means making changes based on experimental evidence rather than opinion.
The term is broad by design. It includes technical performance optimization (reducing load times, improving Core Web Vitals), UX improvements (simplifying navigation, clarifying copy), and conversion rate optimization (increasing signups, purchases, or engagement). What ties these together is the method: measure the current state, hypothesize what would improve it, test the change, and ship based on evidence.
How does experimentation fit into website optimization?
Experimentation is what separates systematic optimization from redesign-and-hope. Without controlled experiments, you can't distinguish between changes that improved outcomes and changes that happened to coincide with an improvement caused by something else: a seasonal traffic shift, a marketing campaign, or a competitor going down.
A/B testing provides the causal link. You split traffic between the original page and a variant, measure the difference in a defined metric, and make a decision based on statistical evidence. This applies to small changes (button placement, headline copy) and large ones (full page redesigns, navigation restructuring).
The challenge with website optimization experiments is that many changes have small effects individually. Moving a CTA button up the page might improve conversion by 0.3 percentage points. That effect is real and compounds over time, but detecting it requires adequate statistical power: enough traffic and enough duration to distinguish the signal from noise. Teams that run optimization experiments on low-traffic pages frequently get inconclusive results, not because the changes don't matter, but because the tests can't detect realistic effect sizes.
What's the difference between client-side and server-side approaches?
Website optimization historically ran in the browser. Tools like Google Optimize and Optimizely's Web Experimentation injected JavaScript that modified the page after it loaded, swapping elements, changing copy, or redirecting to variant pages. This client-side approach is fast to set up (a marketer can create a test without an engineer) but has real downsides: page flicker as the original loads before the variant takes effect, performance degradation from additional JavaScript, and limited ability to test backend logic.
Server-side optimization runs the experiment in the application layer. The server decides which variant to show before sending the response. There's no flicker, no extra JavaScript, and the experiment can test backend changes (algorithms, data sources, pricing logic) that client-side tools can't reach.
Modern website optimization increasingly uses server-side or edge-based evaluation. Confidence's feature flags evaluate in-process at 10 to 50 microseconds with no network call at evaluation time. This means variant assignment happens before the page is rendered, eliminating the flicker problem and removing the performance overhead that client-side tools introduce.
What metrics matter for website optimization?
Three categories.
Performance metrics. Page load time, Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). These are both optimization targets and guardrail metrics: any change that improves conversion but degrades performance may be creating a worse user experience.
Engagement metrics. Bounce rate, pages per session, time on page, scroll depth. These indicate whether users are finding what they're looking for.
Conversion metrics. Signup rate, purchase completion, form submission, any defined business outcome. These are usually the success metrics for optimization experiments.
The risk in website optimization is the same risk in any experimentation: optimizing one metric at the expense of others. A popup that interrupts the user improves email signup rates but may increase bounce rate. Multi-metric decision making, evaluating success metrics alongside guardrails, prevents this kind of narrow optimization.
